Adding a Witness to a Census Event

The B. S. Gifford household, dwelling 1374, contains six members. B. S. Gifford as head of household is a principal in the census event. Follow along as we link people already in the database to this census and add a new person to the database via the Witness Add procedure.

Census Tag Entry Screen
  • To add a witness to an event, click on the yellow + sign in the Tag Entry screen's Witness box (or Witness Tab in the tabbed entry screen). To add more than one person at a time, all of them known to be already included in your database, click on the + sign - binoculars combination button.

Add Witness Screen
  • Clicking the + sign opens the Add Witness screen. If you wish to link a person already included in your database, enter that person's ID number or open the picklist by clicking the binoculars button or hitting F2.

Picklist
  • Link one witness to the event by highlighting that person and selecting Okay. If you want to add multiple witnesses, hold down the control key as you highlight and click each name. Select Okay when you've finished your selections.

Edit Witness Screen
  • Linking the witness (or clicking on a witness to an event) opens the Edit Witness screen.
    • If you've created multiple witness roles for this event, you can choose which role is appropriate for this particular witness.
    • You can select the name variation that matches the person's name as it appears in this event's source.
    • You can edit the witness sentence.
    • You can add a witness memo. This is a new feature in TMG ver. 6.0 and I haven't used it yet.

Add Witness Screen
    B. S. Gifford's wife Julia and son William were already in the database and were simply linked as witnesses, i.e. members of the Gifford household, to this census event. A new person can be added to the database and linked to an event at the same time.
  • Open the Add Witness screen.
  • This time, click the Add Person icon in the top right corner of the screen.
  • This opens a small screen that instructs you to select the sex of the new person. In addition to Male and Female, you can also choose Unknown. Use this option when adding a "Non-person" (census person, cemetery person, etc.) or when the person's name is unknown or gives no clues to the person's gender.

Quick Add Screen
  • TMG now provides a Quick Add screen on which you can enter the new witness's name and information as found in the source for this event on birth, death, and burial.
  • Include the surety of each bit of data if you choose.
  • Don't forget to add the source citation.

Add Witness Screen
  • The Add Witness screen is identical to the Edit Witness screen. Choose a name variation, choose a role, and edit the witness sentence.

Census Tag Entry Screen
  • If you want to switch the focus to one of the witnesses to an event, right click on that witness's name. Then select "Change focus to this person".
  • You can now check your information on this new person or add additional information found in the source. George Farmer's name and birth and the fact that he was a member of B. S. Gifford's 1860 census household already appear on his screen. I added his occupation, shoemaker's apprentice, as well.

Tag Entry Screen, Tabbed Version
  • Earlier versions of TMG listed the witnesses according to their respective ID numbers. If you wish to reorder the witnesses, use the tabbed version of the tag entry screen. The Witness Tab includes arrows that can be used to change the witness order.
  • The Tag Entry format you use is determined by File --> Preferences --> Data Entry --> Check (or uncheck) "Use Tabbed version of Tag entry".
