Creating a Custom Tag

You've thought it over and you've decided you need a custom tag. Remember, there's no one right way to work with TMG. If you need a new tag not found among TMG's standard tag types, creating one is easy.

Tag Type List

Tag Type Definition: General

Tag Type Definition: Roles and Sentencest

Tag Type Definition: Other
  • To create a custom tag, or edit any tag, open the Tag Type List by clicking on the big yellow plus sign on the toolbar or hitting F4 or selecting Add and Add Tag from the menu bar.
  • If you want to create a custom tag, select Add from the Tag Type List to open the Tag Type Definition Screen.
  • The General Tab allows you to Label your new tag, identify the past tense, if appropriate, for your tag, provide an abbreviation and the default style. Then, identify the group to which your custom belongs. Most custom tags can be safely placed in the Other event group. To get an idea of the differences in tag groups, look at the roles and sentences and available fields for representative tags.
  • The Roles and Sentences Tab allows you to create labels and sentences for all participants in the event in addition to those of Principal and Witness. In the illustrated custom tag, Deed, I created the simple roles of Grantor and Grantee. Additional roles could be CoGrantor, CoGrantee, and Surety.
  • Create a narrative sentence for each role. This sentence will appear in narrative reports about a person if this tag is one of those chosen in the Report Definition.
    • Right click in the sentence box for a "cheat sheet" on all the sentence possibilities.
    • Include prepositions with the appropriate variables inside the angle brackets. This provides more variety and control in report output.
    • Note that I routinely exclude most of my sentences. This is because my narrative reports are produced using only the basic vital events found in telegraph paragraphs and Comment Tags. These Comment Tags are hand-written paragraphs based on my analysis of all information. In my opinion, even the best of pre-designed sentences still sound canned.
  • The Other Tab lets you provide a GEDCOM export label and allows you to determine how this custom tag will be labelled on the Person Screen of both Principals and Witnesses.

Click Okay and your new custom tag is ready for use.
