Meeting Summary: 18 December 2004
This page summarizes data input considerations covered in the user group meeting, Saturday,
18 December 2004. Many of the points discussed at the meeting already appear in these pages
under the title The Great Census Debate. Be sure to read it!
Because data input depends upon data output, how you choose to enter your evidence depends upon
how you choose to use that information. Changes we made at the meeting were based on my preferences.
The discussion showed that several people wanted the following reports formatted in ways that I
don't use. If you want to generate these reports frequently, please consider using Diana Begeman's
method for recording census data, Recording
Census Data in TMG
- List of people in a given census
- List of censuses searched for a given year
- List of censuses searched for a given location
Adding Evidence from a Census
Step by Step
- First, add the census source. It's always easy to get carried away when entering evidence and
say, "I'll enter the source later." This is much harder to do after the fact.
- Next, enter information for the census event itself;
- Add all members of the household as witnesses to the census event;
- Finally, enter all information extracted from the census, such as birth and relationship
statements or inferences.
- Remember that I exclude my census sentences. Therefore, at this point I reread my individual narrative
report and add the relevant census evidence to the narrative.
We discused many different TMG procedures in illustrating these steps. Follow the links above or use
this topical list to view each procedure.
