Software - Genealogy Support, etc

The following software is freely available for download. Please note that it is not warranted in any way, and responsibility for its use rests solely with the user. However, I hope you find it as useful as I do.

Most programs run under DOS, and therefore can be used at the command line under Windows 95/98 or NT/2000. Later programs are being prepared in written in Visual Basic and therefore run directly in the Windows environment.

FSPLIT

This program is a simple DOS level utility to split any file into sections for transfer via diskette or email where the original file exceeds the capacity of the media.

It also produces a DOS batch file to effect the recombination of the sections.

FILTER

This program is a simple DOS utility to select records from an ASCII file. I use it to check for any details of relatives or place names from tiny tafels, GEDCOM or other genealogical file listings.

It may be run directly, and the file and search information entered on screen, or it can be used in command line form, and therefore called through a batch file if regular use is required.

FTRIPLET

This DOS program provides a mechanism by which a genealogical database may be examined to ascertain the actual number of ancestors for a given individual, and how many of these are unique. In so doing it creates a list of descent paths from each ancestor, and reports the maximum count of these and the ancestor involved. The program also permits these final counts to be written to a triplet reference file created to hold information on the individuals in the database.

Initial input source is a GEDCOM file, and file naming is user controlled.

Other program utility features include: -

  • output lists of descent results for all individuals to a specified depth of generations, to give an indication of the complexity of the relationships between the people
  • list all the actual ancestral lines between two people, listed in both ancestral and descendant sequences with optional full name listing. The sex of the parent is displayed, to assist in the review of genetic trail patterns.
  • list the descendants of a given person for a specified number of generations
  • list the longest male, female and alternating gender descent paths between two people
  • calculate the shortest descent line between two people in one simple step
  • list the common ancestors for two people showing their cousin relationships with removal level
  • list the people in the file without parents (orphans)
  • list a birth century analysis of the people
  • expand Ahnentafel numbers into parent sequences
  • calculate the Wright Coefficient of Inbreeding from two parents.

ATMATCH

Do you want to compare the details of your genealogical database for a given person or family with that from another researcher? Sound like a daunting task? This program can help!

This Windows program lets you compare the two family sequences. It does this by matching two separate ahnentafel lists for the same individual to identify the similarities and differences between them. I use it to compare the information in my database with that of another person to make updates easier.

Input may be direct from a GEDCOM file, or through ahnentafel listings provided from two specialist programs.

Program features include: -

  • calculate the Wright Coefficient of Inbreeding (very fast routine) and my own Fettes Coefficient of Ancestry for the subject
  • utility routine to join ahnentafel (AT) numbers together, using either Kekule or British number formats
  • log the differences found between the files
  • optional tagging and various matching features
