Modifying clip-art with PSP, Part 1
For a new website that I was creating, I wanted a "headline" graphic. Looking through my many collections of clip art, I came across this likely image from Click-Art's Incredible 65,000 Image Pak.

The graphic didn't match the "style" that I wanted to use on the new site, so I decided to turn it into a wooden inlay:

Here are the steps that I used to transform the image from a simple coloring book appearance to this carved wood style.
Create a new image large enough to hold the finished header. Mine was 450 pixels wide by 200 pixels high; 16 million colors; background color of white:

Open your clip art image and resize it to about the same size as your new image. Mine was about 160 pixels high.
Using the selection tool (rectangle), select the portion of the clip art that you want to use. Copy to the clipboard (ctrl-C) and paste into your new image as a new layer (ctrl-L). Drag this layer over to the left side of your new image:

Hide the background layer:
and use the magic wand to select portions of the clip art that you don't want to keep (such as the white background) and hit the delete key to remove it from this layer:

Using the magic wand, select the outline and promote to a new layer. (Selection/Promote to Layer).

Hide the layer you just created (called "Promoted Selection"), select the layer that you pasted the clip art in (called "Layer 1") and hit the delete key to remove the outline.
